Marie Haines
Marie is a pianist currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at University of Toronto, studying with Lydia Wong. Her research focuses on irony, satire, and parody in Rodion Shchedrin’s solo piano works. Most interested in the comedic and absurdist elements of classical repertoire, Marie often chooses pieces based on the odd, unusual, and entertaining characters they present to the audience. For two years in a row, she has been awarded the Ontario Graduate Scholarship for her work on her dissertation.
As an experienced teacher and active performer in the Toronto area, Marie has been invited to lead several masterclasses and lectures for high school students, and has hosted masterclasses for undergraduate students at the University of Toronto. She has been a course instructor for undergraduate engineering students minoring in music for the last three years, as well as a teaching assistant and frequent guest lecturer for the undergraduate piano pedagogy class.
Beginning piano lessons at the age of five, Marie finished her ARCT while studying with Galina Shostakovsky. She is a graduate of McGill University where she obtained her Bachelor’s in Piano Performance, studying under Marina Mdivani. She also holds a Master’s in Piano Performance from University of Toronto which she completed in 2018 under the tutelage of Marietta Orlov. Most recently, Marie was an invited performer in Music Toronto’s masterclass with Marc-Andre Hamelin at the Glenn Gould School.
